The 3 Best Cures for Yeast Infections in Women

 By

Doctors usually prescribe antifungal drugs in the form of creams, ointments, pessaries and tablets for yeast infections in women. And you can get many of these over-the-counter too. The problem is that they address the symptoms rather than the root cause(s) of your infection so that the infection can return.
As well as the medication you need to address the underlying issues that help to trigger the fungal overgrowth that causes the symptoms of yeast infection. The main issues are a lowered immune system, beneficial bacteria depletion, too high blood sugar levels, hormonal imbalance, body pH imbalance and some drug therapies.
To help address these issues here are 3 of the best cures for yeast infections in women...
1. Healthy Living
The three most important things to help protect your immune system are diet and nutrition (see #2 below), exercise and stress reduction. Daily exercise helps to bolster your immune system, as does relieving the stress in your life.
Get into the habit of exercising daily. Make sure that you set aside time for relaxation and ensure that you get a good night's sleep. Excessive alcohol consumption can also harm your body's immune system, so avoid or massively reduce its intake.
2. Diet and Nutrition
Move to an anti-Candida diet that is structured to avoid you consuming food that either directly encourages the growth of the yeast fungus or negatively impacts your immune system and beneficial bacteria...
This means avoiding sugars and foods high in sugar since yeast feeds and grows on sugar. Refined carbohydrates breakdown into sugar in the body so these should be avoided too.
Also avoid yeast products and foods with high mold content such as cheese and dried fruit, cow's milk and cow's milk dairy products, fermented or malted products, and coffee, tea and carbonated drinks.
Instead of eating everyday meat and poultry which are routinely treated with hormones and other drugs, eat organic instead. Water from the tap can also contain hormones, etc., so drink bottled spring water.
As well as organic meat and poultry, you can consume plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit, herbs, beans and pulses, seeds, shelled nuts, whole-wheat pasta, grains, cottage cheese, plain organic yogurt with live cultures, soya / rice / almond milk, olive oil and non-yeast breads and cakes. Drink herbal teas and infusions.
By sticking to this diet even after your symptoms have gone you will help to boost your immune system and build-up your good bacteria population, so helping to prevent further yeast infections. But for this to work effectively you need to make a habit of closely checking all food labels before purchasing.
Note: You should consult with your doctor before making any significant changes to your diet.
3. Natural Remedies
There are many natural ways to eliminate the symptoms of a yeast infection. Two of the most effective natural antifungal agents are raw garlic and plain yogurt. They can be consumed or used topically.
For topical use the peeled garlic should be pounded to a paste then applied over the affected area. A whole peeled clove of garlic can be inserted in the vagina overnight.
The yogurt needs to be sugar-free with no fruit or coloring and should say something like "active live cultures" on the tub. For internal use a regular tampon can be coated with the yogurt and left in overnight.
So there you have it, the 3 best cures for yeast infection in women. Nos. 1 and 2 are fundamental to curing yeast infections in women. But there are many more natural remedies (no. 3) out there, so do your research and you might find one or more that works even better for you. Good luck!

Showcase: Shelby Garner and Mary Ann Faucher

Showcase on Health Studies Doctoral Alum and Doctoral Student

Mary Ann Faucher, TWU PhD alum and Shelby Garner, TWU doctoral student
Shelby Garner, MSN, RN, CNE (current TWU Health Studies PhD student) & Mary Ann Faucher, CNM, MPH, PhD (TWU Health Studies alum 2002) were recently awarded a $5000 grant from Baylor University's Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Achievement Program to conduct a Photovoice study.  The study is entitled "The Use of Photovoice to Illustrate Challenges and Supports of Caregivers of the Elderly:  A Qualitative Participatory Study".  The study will begin in begin in the Fall of 2012 and will culminate in an art exhibition to display the participant photo's and research findings in the Spring of 2013.  The researchers will also be mentoring four undergraduate students from the Louise Herrington School of Nursing throughout the research process.

Photovoice is a type of qualitative research, using photographs taken by participants, usually those with limited power, to illustrate their environment and experiences and to express their thoughts about them (University of Kansas, 2011). According to Ornelas et al. (2009) the goals of photovoice are to promote acritical conversation and awareness about select population’s important issues through photographs and to provide a platform for the presentation of people’s experiences through their own pictures and language. The purpose of this research project is to collaborate with undergraduate nursing students to identify challenges and support systems utilized by caregivers of the elderly. The study participants, caregivers of the elderly, will be given disposable digital cameras to record their experiences and will answer brief open ended questions related to their thoughts about each picture in small focus group settings.  The photographs will be selected, contextualized, and coded by participants to identify challenges and supports experienced by the caregivers.  After project completion, study participants will be invited to present an art exhibition in which their photographs will be displayed to a target audience that has the capability of implementing policy change to support the caregiver role.  The project will include collaboration with four undergraduate nursing research fellows who will assist with participant training, interviews, data collection and analysis, and dissemination of results.

Heart Healthy Strategies Any Woman Can Use

 By

At one time heart disease was considered to be a man's disease. That is no longer the case, as heart disease has become the number one threat to women and a leading cause of death. Since practicing prevention is important in guarding our health in every respect, doesn't it make sense to implement some strategies now, rather than waiting until you develop a problem?
Inflammation of the cells is a disorder that is frequently associated with the aging process. However because of the western lifestyle, we are seeing more problems associated with inflammation in younger women as well. It is a common denominator in all kinds of chronic conditions and in particular affects the circulatory system. You will see many health news headlines about the problems caused by inflammation and how to prevent it or clear it up if you are already experiencing the effects of it.
Here are some steps that you can implement in your daily life:
1. Begin by making an appointment with your doctor for a physical exam. It's impossible to know what you will need to change unless you know where you are starting. When you make the appointment, tell them that you want an evaluation of any factors that may be affecting your heart or circulatory health. Be sure to take a complete list of any medications and supplements that you are taking. Also have a written list of your own health history and family history. Even if you have been seeing the same doctor for a while, don't assume that she/he knows these things. It is important to be your own health advocate.
2. Make a point of reducing your stress, and consider this an ongoing necessary step to guarding your health and preventing heart disease. Stress is a huge factor in causing inflammation! In addition to the fact that we live in stressful times, women playing multiple roles often suffer in particular from attempting to juggle work, family, financial concerns. They are often great at taking care of others, but lousy at good self care! Put yourself on the schedule, and take time for hanging out with friends; self care such as a yoga class, a massage, reading, quiet and contemplation. Learning to meditate will be a great health benefit.
3. Exercise several times a week. If you are not exercising at all, start now. Keep it simple...no need to run a marathon (unless that appeals to you). Go for a walk, and pick up the pace as you are able to. If going to a gym motivates you, then do that. Aerobic activity that increases your heart and respiration level is what you are going for. There are added health benefits for weight training, but start with aerobics for reducing inflammation.
4. Improve your diet by getting Omega 3 fatty acids, which are ALA, EPA and DHA. You can find omega-3 pdf information online that will expand your knowledge about the important health benefits. Dr. Andrew Weil states that these omega-3 fatty acids help to support mental and physical health. In particular EPA supports heart and circulatory health.
You can get more EPA by eating dark, leafy vegetables and algae. Both EPA and DHA are also found in the fatty tissues of cold water, oily fish. Many people are concerned about ingesting contaminates such as mercury with ocean caught and even farm raised fish. If this concerns you, high quality fish oil supplements may be the answer.
According to the American Heart Association, omega-3 maintains healthy blood flow, carrying oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Research reports show that omega-3 fish oil may benefit you by: slowing the build-up of plagues in the arteries; reducing the incidents of stroke and heart attacks; lowering your blood pressure; reducing triglycerides; reducing arrhythmia or irregular heartbeats; and lessening the chance of sudden cardiac death in people with heart disease.
Fish oil for women is a supplement that just makes sense for those who want to guard against the ravages of inflammation. As you implement these steps to improve your health and your cardiovascular system, consider this efficient and helpful addition to your daily regimen.

Following Healthy Eating Guidelines for Pregnant Women

 By

Following healthy eating guidelines for pregnancy need not be difficult. Here are a few things you need to take into consideration while you are pregnant.
If you are not following healthy eating guidelines for good nutrition, the time to start is before you become pregnant. This way, you are beginning with the good nutrients that you and your baby both need. Eating guidelines for pregnant women exclude the use of high sugar foods, and caffeine, which has been linked to miscarriage. Additional portions of green leafy vegetables for additional folic acid are recommended. If you are on a pre-pregnancy diet, you should be getting additional B vitamins and folic acid through a daily multi-vitamin.
Once you become pregnant, you should be taking a prenatal vitamin and change your healthy eating habits to include foods high in iron, calcium and vitamins A, B, C and D in addition to the afore-mentioned Folic Acid. All of these increases will help build healthy bones, blood and brain matter for your developing baby. Your body needs to stay strong and healthy and you can build a healthy little human by following these healthy eating guidelines.
Heartburn and gastric disturbances are common during pregnancy, so you will need to experiment with excluding spicy or gassy foods that may cause these problems. Be sure to use good cleanliness practices in preparing foods. Hand washing, fully cooking meats and washing vegetables and foods will help to avoid a disease called listeriosis which is particularly harmful to pregnant women. This condition is caused by bacteria in food and on surfaces and can be avoided by proper cleanliness practices. If you feel flu-like symptoms, consult your doctor immediately as these symptoms could also be caused by listeriosis, and you and your baby will need immediate treatment.
Follow healthy eating guidelines before during and after pregnancy. You will gain weight, and you should. Keep the weight gain within healthy limits by following healthy eating guidelines during pregnancy and don't over indulge in cravings. You will be much more likely to lose post-pregnancy weight gain of you follow healthy eating guidelines before and after pregnancy. You want to grow a healthy baby, so don't be too concerned about the pregnancy weight, but do keep it in check by tracking your weight gain through the pregnancy, and adjusting your diet according to your doctor's advice.
Stay healthy and grow a healthy baby by following healthy eating guidelines before during and after pregnancy. Give your baby the best start possible in life.

Weight Loss Diets for Women - Basic Principles

 By

There are numerous weight loss diets for women available, because everybody has food related preferences. Therefore, women prefer to keep only certain diets that fit their lifestyle better. Here are some principles underlying the most famous diets.
One way that can help you reach the weight you desire is changing the metabolism by reducing the intake of carbohydrates, thereby dissolving the body fat. This diet is best suited for women who want to see immediate results.
Another famous principle that helps in losing weight is alternating a day in which you can eat whatever you desire and crave for, with a day in which you do not eat more than 500 calories. This method can block the process that stores fat, and it is also stated that it enhances the immune system.
Other weight loss diets for women state that a diet plan based on low-calorie foods, high protein, and non-fat, that has the purpose to significantly diminish your appetite is another way of reaching the weight you desire.
A good principle is also the division of carbohydrates depending on how fast your body processes and changes them into energy. Foods that release energy gradually are preferred, because they delay hunger and provide enough energy throughout a day.
Other diets include a principle that promotes the adjustment of the insulin in the body within certain levels, by eating food at optimal time intervals and keeping the right balance. It is also important to keep an eye on the other hormones. This way the body works within an ideal zone, ensuring weight loss and a high level of energy.
Other weight loss diets for women suggest low-fat and low-calorie food, or calorie counting. For the last one, you have to determine how many calories everything you eat or drink has. For losing weight, you should keep the day-by-day calories intake lower than your body and daily activities require.
Another way of losing weight is breaking the cycle that causes the insulin levels to rise or fall, a process that occurs as a result of eating quickly absorbed carbohydrates, thus encouraging you to snack. This is another diet that helps losing weight fast and it also helps eliminate the extra pounds around the abdomen.
All you have to do is to choose the diet that fits your taste and needs the best, because there are many weight loss diets for women available on the market, online, or in magazines.

Guest Post: How to Get a Great Workout While Reconstructing Your Space

You know when you feel like you just need a makeover? Not a new hair color or shade of eyeliner. You need a makeover, mind, body and soul. We’ve all been there before, and, what’s actually great about this frustrating feeling is that it gives you motivation to make some changes.  Change is always a good thing, and it’s important to continue growing for your own emotional well-being. Two of the best ways to give yourself a mind and body makeover is by getting fit and re-designing your living space. These two small changes can make a world of difference in the way you feel about yourself and your surroundings. So, why not kill two birds with one stone?

Here are some simple ways to focus on getting some much-needed exercise during the process of changing the look of your home:

Lift with squats.
You’ve probably heard that the best way to lift things is through the legs. It helps protect your back from injury and is the only safe way to do heavy lifting. But, more superficially speaking, it’s the absolute best way to tone those thighs and gluts!  When you’re moving around heavy furniture, like couches or tables, focus on doing half or full squats at the same time. Make sure to keep your back straight and your knees bent so they don’t go past your toes. As you lift an object, first use your thigh and glute muscles to lift yourself up. Even if you only do a few squats, you will be surprised at how sore you will be the next day.

Strengthen your core with balance.
Our core is the root to full-body health. This is the area that includes the front and back of your stomach and your glutes. Your core is so important because it supports your spine and, in doing so, your entire body. Having a strong core helps you do everything from dance, to playing sports, to picking up after a little one. When you are working in your space, doing things like balancing on ladders, or carrying wobbly objects up flights of stairs, pay attention to the way you are holding your core.  Try to contract the muscles surrounding the spine, tighten your stomach muscles, and keep your glutes firm.

Tone your arms by decorating.
Lifting and moving objects above your head is a great way to tone your arms and shoulders. Will you be doing some painting? Instead of calling in reinforcements or professional painters, do the job yourself. Focus on using your muscles to move the brushes from side to side, and make sure to switch arms frequently. Your arms will feel so good the next day, you’ll wish you could paint again!

Add an exercise area, and you’re ready to keep up the trend.
The most important step is the last one. To keep this trend going and truly enjoy your new space makeover, create a special area dedicated to fitness. Go out and buy a workout mat, some free weights, an exercise ball, and some resistance bands. These simple pieces of equipment can help you get on track to total body fitness and truly enjoy the changes you’ve made.

The Best Weight Loss Diet for Women - Tips That Can Make Your Choice Easier

 By

The best weight loss diet for women is a goal quite a few overweight ladies try to reach. How do you recognize the most effective diet? You might want to consult your doctor before you begin any diet, to be sure you made the right choice, but here are a few tips that will also help you.
You should pick a diet matching your lifestyle, a flexible and easy one. If you have long working hours and you do not have time for cooking or you do not enjoy this activity, go for foods that are simple to prepare or that you can buy in restaurants, so that you never neglect your diet. If your schedule is quite flexible and you enjoy creating a meal, you may want a diet that allows a wider range of foods.
You should also think about the intensity and speed with which you want to lose weight. If you plan to lose more weight, be ready to exercise daily and use more constraining dietary habits. Nevertheless, it is usually good to lose about one to two pounds weekly, so do not attempt to lose excessively in a short period of time. The best weight loss diet for women is based on the principle of slow and steady.
In a healthy diet, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, almonds, nuts, and other good nutrients should have priority. The quality and amount of calories you choose are very important. Depending on how much you weigh and how much you want to lose, there is an ideal number of calories you should consume daily. If you burn more calories than you eat, you will lose weight.
You should beware of diets with a too low calories limit or that ask you to miss on some food groups, because these diets are a temporary solution. It is better to have all nutrients in the right amounts than miss some of them completely - that is the best weight loss diet for women.
A very important step is to be motivated and persistent. Also, a good thing is to change your eating habits permanently, this way you will know how to maintain a great figure. Eating in a healthy way will not only make you lose the extra pounds, but it will also help you prevent some diseases and have more energy. Hence, the best weight loss diet for women is eating healthy foods in the right proportions.

Creating Good Weight Loss Programs for Women

 By

The biggest problem with weight loss programs for women is the fact that they might be built for someone else and they might not be suitable in your case. Contrary to what you might believe, the most effective weight loss programs are different from one person to the other. We have to take into account a lot of factors from the pounds that need to be shed to the timeframe that you have to respect. So what can you do in order to create perfect weight loss programs for women?
The first thing to analyze is the weight problem that has to be taken care of. How many pounds do you need to get rid of? In the event that the amount is big you will have to be prepared to spend a long time till the results are gained. Then you will have to think about timeframe but you need to be realistic. It is true that there are some weight loss programs for women that are based on diets that will help you lose weight really fast. The problem is that the loss of weight is not at all proper. In most cases you will actually become dehydrated or you will lose weight that should not be loss (ie. Losing muscle mass structure). In all situations such a program will lead to health problems and eventually you are going to put the weight back on. Most women even get to be heavier. It is a really bad idea to not lose weight properly.
We recommend that you read as much as possible about this subject although there is a very strong chance that you are going to fail if you do not know exactly what you are doing. In most cases women should go to a trainer or a nutritionist in order to lose weight. Weight loss should be done as a proper combination between working out and dieting. Diets are really effective if you respect them. In order to lose weight all that you basically need to do is to burn more calories than you are eating. Although it sounds simple, this can be really difficult if you are not working out. Through a proper workout routine you are going to burn many more calories as opposed to a regular lifestyle.
Another thing that you need to take into account is that there are many nutritional supplements that are going to help you reach better results with your weight loss programs for women. We recommend that you also take this into account so that you can gain points when referring to timeframe needed. It is normal to want to lose weight as fast as possible but your health needs to be really important. You also have to take into account your overall health. In some cases changes have to be done in the event that there are foods that cannot be eaten or exercises that cannot be performed. The bottom line is that you need patience but you are surely going to succeed.
Let this weight loss program for women help you to lose weight when all other programs fail you. Check out LosingWeightHelp.com for more tips and tricks for the best way how to lose belly fat.

Weight Loss Tips for Women After Forty

 By

Life begins at forty, but losing that excess fat at 40 is not everyone's piece of cake. Not just the rigorous task of going through a slow metabolism, but the hormonal changes brings about new challenges like weight gain. The symptoms to these changes are allergies, depression, anxiety, hair loss, facial hair, low libido, nausea, dizziness, headaches, etc.
The busy lifestyle leaves many women with the need for adequate sleep. Insomnia and sleep apnoea are pretty common with the huge responsibilities that they need to shoulder. Sleeping through the required amount of time is efficient for any weight loss regime. Six to eight hours a day is a necessity to keep up sound health. Sleep deprivation is not unusual with age.
Simply exercising or a diet program might not provide adequate results. At this age, women need to learn about leading a healthy lifestyle. Avoiding junk food with fats and oils would come as the first step in any weight loss tip. Sugar or any other sweetening products, even the ones which say low-fat products should be avoided. They lower down your metabolic rate.
The diet maintained by a woman at forty should differ from that of a young lady. You need to understand that your body can no longer assimilate the carbohydrates. Hence the consumption should be put under control. The food cooked for teens is extra fattening for you. Cook separately for yourself.
The busy schedule rarely gives you anytime for exercise. You need to fit in some daily physical activity which you can do along with your work. Try taking the stairs, walk while you are over the phone, even standing rather than sitting can burn up to more than 150 calories per day. You need to find out the activities you can incorporate within your hectic schedule.
If nothing works out, take time out for breathing exercises at dawn. It will not only burn the fats, but also help you clear your early bowel movements. Take two spoons of honey with few drops of lime in lukewarm water for at least two weeks. These homemade remedies might take some time but the results prevail longer.
Lastly, do not forget the power of water. By far this is the best weight loss tip ever. It detoxifies, burns calorie, cleans your blood etc. Losing your weight after a certain age might not be easy but it is not impossible.

Weight Loss For Women: Top 5 Secrets You Can't Live Without

 By

Hello ladies, are you tired of every other ad claiming that they have a program specifically designed for weight loss for women? From one lady to another, stop torturing yourself with these addictive claims. Learn an effective way to lose weight safely and quickly without jitters and without losing your bank account. Learn the 5 secrets for successful weight loss that you can do anywhere and anytime.
It is tiring every time you turn your head or turn on the radio or television one or more ads will appear claiming to be for quick weight loss. Really, especially with the new year that is all you hear about. Every single time the television is on, an ad talks about how great their program can help you lose weight and not do anything differently. Then you jump in your car to get the kids, and guess what's on the radio? You got it another ad about how this system will help you lose weight and oh, this one says it is natural (and you don't have to change your habits with this one either). Remember, natural doesn't mean anything if it isn't healthy. Opium is natural. Marijuana is natural. That doesn't mean you should use it. And finally, you think it couldn't get any worse, but you take a deep breath, yet you are bombarded by it:
  • Your friends are telling you about the latest and greatest - Facebook, Twitter, Emails, Phone calls etc
  • Stores have ads in every isle
  • Billboards
  • Radio
  • Television
It is everywhere. As if we didn't feel bad enough that we let the last few stressful years of our busy lives take over and add extra weight - now they have to keep telling us. Well, ladies, it is NOT your fault. These are gimmicks and great marketing techniques - not great weight loss techniques. If these silly ideas worked then 2/3 of the adults wouldn't be overweight and the average person would not gain a whopping 12 pounds over the holiday season.
Whether it is a little or a lot, these 5 secrets are ideal for weight loss for women (excellent weight loss for men too, but let's not tell them yet).
Don't worry, you'll lose those pounds without being fatigued, stressed, or overwhelmed so let's get started. Let's do this naturally and safely so you can lose the weight and keep the weight off for good. We aren't talking a diet: we are talking about a system for a healthy lifestyle.
This is a journey. This is the most important step to understand and to accept! You didn't gain the weight overnight, so you probably won't lose it overnight. It is important to set realistic goals and practice commitment. Any diet that says you don't need to do anything other than buy their product and you will lose tons of weight fast is either 1. A lie, 2. Unhealthy or 3. Both. Set small goals that build into a big goal.
To maximize weight loss for women it is essential to combine as many of the following as possible as often as you can without feeling deprived. It is important to learn to incorporate the cravings you have so that you'll stick to this new lifestyle.
1. Reduce Calories Slowly: Reduce calories by about 500-1000 cal a day to lose about 2 pounds a week. Some people lose more, and some less but this is a good rule of thumb. This is considered a safe range to lose so you can keep it off. It's not safe and eventually you will gain more back if you deplete your body of calories too fast. If you cut your calories too rapidly or too low, your body will tend to feed off the valuable muscle. This is disastrous to any weight loss program because muscle makes us look firm and sexy, muscle keeps our metabolisms strong, and muscle is what our heart is made of. Cutting back too fast can damage your heart
How to lower our calories? A key way to do this is by increasing your activity level: workout, walk more (just parking your car farther helps significantly), and take the steps, etc. As an added bonus, more activity will lower your stress, improve your sleep, increase your overall energy and help you stay motivated.
2. Make Healthy Food Choices: This can be tricky when you are surrounded by contradicting information "Eat low Carbs, Eat Low Fat, Eat this...Eat that...". Well, here are the facts. According to University of Illinois, diets higher in lean protein and lean dairy have been proven to help weight loss. Eating less processed foods and less artificial foods is easier for your body to metabolize, therefore, helps with weight loss. Avoid empty calories like soft drinks and flavored coffees. Did you know that just by choosing healthy carbohydrate choices like sweet potatoes, veggies, and quinoa etc, it has been proven that you can reduce unsafe deep belly fat by 11%? It is true. And this deep belly fat is definitely our enemy because it is a contributing factor in heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
Also, eating foods that are high in leucine, an amino acid, will greatly help your journey to a healthier, sexier you. Leucine has been used for years by body builders and others that want to shed unwanted fat while maintaining lean muscle. Remember it is this lean muscle is that helps us maintain a higher metabolism, and it is muscle that gives us that lean, firm, sexy look that we all dream of, plus a healthy heart as mentioned earlier.
3. Keep a Journal: This is a must. You may not find it enjoyable to see that you just drank all your calories in 3 lattes but it is important to know where the calories are going. An online diary is an excellent resource that can track exercise and food calories to optimize weight loss for women. In a recent weight loss study, people who kept a journal doubled their weight loss in a 6 month period when compared to those who did not keep a journal. It is a powerful tool for weight loss for women.
4. Adequate Sleep: Sufficient sleep is about 6-8 hours a night for an average adult. Sleep helps a number of things besides weight loss. It also helps to reduce stress and repair the body. As we know, stress has tons of negative side effects and a biggie is weight gain.
5. Reduce Stress: You may be thinking, easier said than done. Well, that is true. Remember this is a journey: it is a lifestyle commitment to a healthier, better you so it may not be super easy at first. But it will be super effective and you will LOVE the results. In fact, after a few weeks, your energy will begin to rise as you lose weight, and you'll wonder why you ever ate the way you did before. You will LOVE the new you - inside and out.
Now you have the tools to actually succeed with this year's resolution so Good Luck and welcome to your new healthy lifestyle.

National Women's Health Week

May 13th through 19th is National Women's Health Week! The observance was coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Women's Health, and is designed to help encourage women to improve their physical and mental health. In keeping with this goal, the theme for 2012 is "It's Your Time", and it is hoped that women all around the nation will take time this week to do all of those things that we often put off the rest of the year, such as
  • Getting a health checkup or preventative screening
  • Working on becoming more active
  • Focusing on creating and sticking to a healthy diet
  • Paying more attention to our stress level and overall mental health
  • Avoiding - or stopping - unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking
To learn more about the observance and to get ideas for ways that you can work on taking better care of yourself, check out the website here: http://womenshealth.gov/whw/.

I also wanted to take a moment to spotlight TWU's own Institute for Women's Health. This group is focused on becoming a comprehensive authority on women's health and well-being and they have made it their mission to enhance women's health through research, education, and advocacy. Each year they hold the Power of a Healthy Woman conference, and the 2012 conference is coming up on Saturday, September 22nd. In addition, they are currently working on several other research projects. So, if you have not yet explored this resource, be sure to check them out!

What ideas do you have for ways to take better care of yourself? Do you have any goals for your health this week? If so, share them with us!

Why Women Live Longer Than Men

 By

It is a fact that the average woman lives as much as five to ten years longer than the average man. Most of the people who are over one hundred years old and still living today are women. Although this may not seem like a big difference, it is a curious one and may help us learn how to live longer in general. In order to understand why women live longer, start by looking in to general health and how nature influences it.
Behavioral Influences
Consider the behavior related factors that influence the numbers here. When men reach their teen years, they usually experience a boost in testosterone. This can lead to behavior changes that may be risky. This period in a man's life can extend into his early twenties. During that time, many young men wind up ending their lives through dangerous activities, such as excessive drinking and reckless driving. Although the actual causes of death are not natural, it is tied back to a natural part of growing up. A man's behavior during his early years can determine if he will live longer than the average woman.
The Effect of Menstruation on Longevity
A woman's most natural life change, her menstrual cycle, may also have a hand in her ability to live longer. This causes an iron deficiency in women that may slow the aging of cells. As a result, cardiovascular disease tends to effect women later in life, leaving them with more healthy years. Men on the other hand, tend to suffer from the complications of these health problems earlier.
General Health Habits
Overall, men tend to smoke more and eat more high cholesterol food than women do. Although the statistics are always changing as more men adopt a healthier lifestyle, it has been an influence on which gender will live longer for years. In time, the scale may shift and that five or ten year gap may close. However, for the time being health habits are a determining factor.
Everyone, no matter what gender you are, should strive to lead a healthy life. By doing so, men and women can both live longer and enjoy more of their years as strong, capable seniors. Regardless of what nature or society dictates, by taking responsibility for your own health you can influence your natural life span.
Looking your best can add a boost of confidence. It is a whole lot of fun, too! For more beauty tips, check out Simple Nail Designs, where you can learn how to do a French Nail Manicure.

Stay Healthy and Enjoy a Happy Sex Life

 By

Women's fitness and healthy living can offer many benefits for your physical and mental health. But did you know that a healthy lifestyle may be the key to promoting a happy sex life? The better you feel physically the more likely it is that you will be healthy enough for sex. Building your muscles, especially your pelvic floor muscles actually helps to improve the functions of your sexual organs.
Nutrition is nature's medicine. Begin with a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins and healthy fats. Overeating, especially foods that are high in saturated fats, leads to high blood cholesterol and obesity, both major causes of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This can mean your body is not healthy enough for sex.
Sex is good for you. When women's estrogen levels drop at menopause, the vaginal walls lose some of their elasticity. It's possible to slow this process or even reverse it through sexual activity. Sex is your vagina's women's fitness program.
Exercise promotes healthy sex: Regular aerobic activity, Pilates, Yoga and strength training exercises all promote women's fitness and may help to improve your sex life. Exercise helps the cardio system and aids in flexibility and stamina to help you enjoy better sex for a longer time.
If your sex life is still lacking, you might try these helpful hints:
Get out of the bedroom. Maybe you've never had sex on the kitchen floor or in a secluded spot in the woods; now might be the time to try it. Or try exploring erotic books and films. Even just the feeling of naughtiness you get from checking out an X-rated movie at the local video store might make you feel frisky.
Sensuality counts. Create an environment for lovemaking that appeals to all five of your senses. Light scented candles, cover your bed with silk or satin for a sensual touch. Play music that you both enjoy, buy flowers and place in a lovely vase. Make your bedroom a special place to make love.
Be playful. Take a bubble bath together or even a shower. Being wet and naked together is a great lead-in to sex. Wash each other's backs. Tickle. Laugh. Enjoy.
Let your imagination soar. Be creative by varying your activity. For example, if you're used to making love on Saturday morning, choose Sunday morning instead. Have sex in the middle of the week. Be open to different positions and new activities. Try sex toys and purchase sexy lingerie.
Be romantic. Surprise each other with flowers when it isn't a special occasion. Plan a day when all you do is lie in bed, talk, and be intimate. Leave sweet messages on each other's cell phones. Tell your lover how special he is and how much you love him.

Breast Cancer - Prevent With Healthy Living

 By

Generally speaking, breast cancer can be explained as an abnormal growth or a mass of cells, also known as a tumor, anywhere within the breast or immediate surrounding area. Usually the breast tumor is felt to be a lumpy mass during the early stages of breast cancer. If a woman feels a lump or abnormality of the breast of any kind, she should see a doctor immediately. In many cases, there is no cause for alarm, but because breast cancer can be a killer, medical attention is highly recommended.
When breast cancer is detected early, it can be treated quickly and effectively - usually with excellent results. Quick treatment is essential because all breast tumors start off benign initially. If the tumor has not begun to grow abnormally and is removed during the benign stage, the cancer may not spread. If the cancer does not spread, the woman is able to lead a normal, cancer-free life from that point on.
As with most cancers, the exact cause of breast cancer has not been pinpointed. However, there are many risk factors applied to many women. There are many arguments that breast cancer is hereditary, so if there is a history of the cancer in a woman's family, she should see a doctor regularly for preventative measures. While heredity may play a role, life choices do as well. For instance, women who smoke cigarettes and consume alcohol regularly are at a higher risk for breast cancer than those who do not. Additionally, obese women that do not engage in regular physical activity are at an elevated risk for breast cancer.
It has been found, however, that altering the levels of hormones in the body can lead to different forms of cancer, breast cancer included. Many women take drugs and supplements that have estrogen as a main ingredient. These medications are used to increase sexual drive, assist in lactation, or deal with menopause. There are studies currently underway to help determine the influence of increased levels of estrogen on the development of breast cancer.
Despite the exact causes of breast cancer being unknown, there are many resources explaining and suggesting how a woman might prevent it. While much of this literature is purely speculation, there are precautions all women can take including maintaining a healthy body weight. Because overweight women have a higher chance of developing breast cancer, it is a good idea to lose the fat. Also, regular visits to the doctor are recommended. However, one of the best ways a woman can monitor her breast health is by conducting the at-home exam once a month.
In addition to regular doctor visits and maintaining a healthy body weight, a healthy diet and plenty of exercise can also influence the onset, or not, of many types of cancers. Foods that contain nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants essential to preventing breast cancer include cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and legumes. Other good foods are any type of citrus, tomatoes and soy products. A diet low in carbohydrates may also be helpful.
Combining the healthy diet with regular exercise, a positive attitude and an overall healthy lifestyle may dramatically reduce a woman's chances of developing breast cancer. By no means are these suggestions the only answer, but should be followed as part of an overall attempt at living as healthy as possible.

Anti Aging and Genomics For Women's Health

 By

Anti aging products have been around for years, from creams to pills to bath oils - they're all designed to make women look and feel younger. What many women don't realize is that the aging process begins right after we're born! Each time the skin is exposed to the rays of the sun, some slight aging occurs. Unfortunately, it takes years for the evidence of aging to show up for most women.
Ten or twenty years of sun bathing can equal lots of wrinkles and skin discoloration once a woman reaches her 40s or 50s. The anti aging products on the store shelves then become very attractive, but many will not work after reaching a certain age. That's why a new cutting edge science in Genomics is getting noticed in the anti-aging market. It's a new natural discovery that defies aging through cell rejuvenation.
What is Genomics?
Genomics is the study and experimentation of genomes, or an organism's complete DNA makeup, that is found in virtually every cell of the human body. In studying genomics, scientists have discovered ways to encourage cell repair and healthy cell development as the body produces new cells every day. This process is ongoing so having healthy cells is pertinent to good women's health.
Through cutting edge science in genomics and a devotion to help women with anti-aging, natural products have been developed to help prevent aging and maintain beauty for many years. Through cell rejuvenation, the body is capable of healthy aging.
Food and Aging
If we need natural ingredients found in foods to have healthy cells, why not just eat a more healthy diet? Eating healthy is important in slowing the aging process, but it's usually not enough unless you eat raw vegetables from your own garden! Many fruits and vegetables are grown in nutritionally-depleted soil, shipped to the grocery, cooked in oil and served on the platter. Through this entire process, the foods are losing important minerals and nutrients women need for healthy living. Taking an anti-aging supplement provides nutrients and minerals needed to replace those lost in foods.
Good Bone and Joint Health
Another area of concern for women is bone and joint health. Proteins help to keep bone and joint tissue healthy and strong. With arthritis and osteoporosis being so prevalent among older women, it's wise to start working on good bone and joint health at a young age. Products are available to help restore minerals that are lost in the bones and joints during the aging process.
Anti-aging research through genomics is still fairly new, but many women are already seeing results when using natural, genomics-based anti-aging products.

The Truth About Diets That Every Woman Should Know

 By

What You Need To Know About Your Dieting Efforts
Contrary to the consistent marketing efforts of the multi billion pound diet industry (estimated to be worth a staggering US$586.3 billion by 2014*), diets don't work and I'm here to tell you the truth.
The truth is diets only work as a limited and superficial solution to the problem of being overweight and obesity. They may help you to lose the weight, but what's the point if (like an unbelievable 90-95% of dieters), you end up putting it all back on again?
What you really want is an effective, long-term strategy - a change in lifestyle - to address the cause of the problem and most importantly keep the weight off.
As someone who spent many years of my adult life on what I call the yo-yo treadmill, I have personally researched almost every diet on the market. You too huh?
This includes a period spent following a somewhat effective Very Low Calorie Diet with which I successfully lost over 4 stone.
I say somewhat effective since without a plan beyond losing the weight I quickly began to rapidly put the weight back on again until I slammed the brakes and put more effective weight management strategies in place.
So I'm here to tell you that diets alone don't work, at least not as a sole solution to losing weight.
I repeat, diets alone do NOT work.
Let's be clear, I'm not completely against weight reducing diets. Where appropriate I will recommend evidence-based diet plans. But the fact is any weight loss diet will only address the weight problem superficially, and will often do little or nothing to address the cause.
Your weight problem is simply a symptom, the effect of a deeper or separate issue altogether. You need to raise your awareness of what it actually is that's causing the problem in the first place. You can then design an individual long-term strategy for success which will enable you to lose the weight AND keep it off. PERMANENTLY!
Suggestion- You don't really want to be on a diet for the rest of your life. That would so NOT be fun. By all means go on a sensible, weight reducing diet, but BE WARNED, diet is just one component of your weight loss.
Think of it as the start of your introduction to your new healthy habits. Better still try to incorporate healthy changes to your diet that you can stick to for the long haul. Take my advice and use these tips to work out a simple, sustainable strategy for losing the weight and keeping it off!

Women's Issues - Tips for Healthy Living

Women of all ages should visit their gynecologists for an annual physical examination to maintain optimum health. If they are sexually active, their annual physical should include a Pap smear test, which is a test that detects cervical cancer. The Pap smear has played an enormous role in decreasing the cervical cancer rate among young women. In addition, women between the ages of 40 and 50 should include mammograms along with their annual physicals. When women cross the age 50, they should include testing for colorectal cancer along with their physical examination.
Parents especially mothers, should teach their adolescent daughters about self-examination for breast cancer. Early awareness helps young women detect breast cancer in the early stages. All women should follow the below mentioned tips for healthy living. Mothers should follow these as well as educate their daughters about healthy lifestyles, so both mother and child grow to have healthier and longer lives.
Women of all ages need the mineral calcium in their body. Research suggests that the Post Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) including cramps can be reduced by 50% if proper calcium supplementation is followed. Osteoporosis after menopause can also be reduced drastically if proper daily calcium supplementation is followed. The menopausal women can reduce hot flashes and night sweats by taking vitamin E 400-800 mg per day. This also helps them protect their immune system and cardiovascular health.
If a woman is considering having children, then folic acid supplementation reduces the chances of them giving birth babies with birth defects. Stress is also one of the major factors that affect women's health. Research has shown that women can add few more healthy years to their life by finding ways to reduce stress. One of the proven ways to reduce stress is practicing yoga for 20 - 30 minutes a day.
The chances of having hormonal imbalance increases after a woman reaches the age 30, so if you are at this age range, talk to your doctor so that he/she can recommend a prescription for over the counter hormone supplements. Visits to dentists should also be done once in at least six months to keep your mouth clean and maintain your beautiful smile to help you look younger. Quit or avoid smoking completely, as well as drinking alcohol. Try to drink at least eight ounces of water everyday. Drinking water prevents your body from dehydration and helps flush the impurities from the body. When going out in the sun use proper sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful rays of the sun, potential skin cancer, and heat strokes. Unless you are in a single healthy relationship, always use a condom and practice safe sex. This helps reduce the chances of developing cervical cancer and other sexually transmitted diseases. Also, try to integrate exercise for 20-30 minutes everyday to lessen your chances of developing heart related illnesses while giving you more energy everyday.

An Easy Way to Look Younger

 By

When it comes to caring for your skin, you will find that regular exfoliation is one of the best ways to prevent a number of serious skin disorders. Acne is only one of the disorders eliminated by regular exfoliation, and you will find by doing this your skin will look fresh and young.
Why is exfoliation so important?
Many people find that they are suffering from serious acne problems, but a number of serious skin disorders are caused by the skin being dirty. Having dirty skin provides bacteria with a hospitable environment in which to grow, which is why regular exfoliation of your skin plays such a vital role in keeping your skin looking healthy and vibrant.
Exfoliating scrubs are designed to clean all of the dirt and grime out of your pores. The grains of a face and body buffing scrub perform a deep scrubbing, which helps to keep your pores free of dirt and germs that would cause acne and other skin disorders to break out. The scrubbing also helps to give your skin a fresh look, by sloughing off dead skin cells and allowing younger cells to come to the surface of your skin.
Exfoliating regularly gives your skin a shine like nothing else can, as the scrubbing causes the blood flow to your skin to increase. This increased blood flow ensures that your skin is being fed all of the nutrients that it needs to stay healthy, and your skin will look much fresher and younger thanks to the fact that your exfoliating is getting rid of all of the grime and dirt that would dry it out. If you have oily skin that grime could clog up your pores. The increased blood flow also helps get rid of cellulite.
There are many good products that use natural ingredients. These include Jojoba, gingko, and other fruit products. They ensure that your skin looks and feels young, while the exfoliating scrub with the small grains helps to eliminate all of the dirt and germs that would cause skin problems.
Make sure you use a product designed to be used for the face on your face and a body scrub for the body for the best effects on the skin, ensuring that your skin feels soft and smooth as you apply it on a regular basis. Applying exfoliating cream at least once a week ensures that you can keep your skin cleaner, though many experts recommend using a scrub at least every 3 days. By regularly exfoliating your skin you will be adding an anti aging skin care regimen to your routine. Your skin will look smoother and will have that youthful glow!

May is National Mental Health Month

Nearly 60 million people - approximately one quarter of the adult population in America - suffer from diagnosable mental health disorders each year.

Since 1949, May has been designated as National Mental Health Month, in an effort to raise social awareness of mental health conditions and treatment. The website for Mental Health America is supporting this observance this year by providing an informative toolkit called "Do More for 1 in 4".  This toolkit is "a call to action for Americans to help the 1 in 4 American adults in their lives who are living with a diagnosable, treatable mental health condition". This toolkit provides information on some of the most common mental health disorders:
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Anxiety Disorder (including panic, obsessive-compulsive, post traumatic stress, phobias, and generalized anxiety disorders)
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Clinical Depression
For more information on the "Do More for 1 in 4" project, please see this link: http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/go/may.
